STV GROUP WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE PRODUCTION OF HYDRA 70 AMMUNITION FOR CZECH HELICOPTERS
STV GROUP and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems have entered into an agreement for the joint production and delivery of HYDRA 70 ammunition for Czech BELL TEXTRON AH-1Z helicopters. Deliveries of these attack helicopters to the Czech Air Force from the United States will begin in 2023.
The HYDRA 70 is one of the most widely used types of munitions in the US armed forces for airborne platforms. It is an unguided 70 mm (2.75 in) caliber missile used primarily for air support of infantry. It is carried not only by the H-1 series helicopters but also by other legendary helicopters of the US Armed Forces such as the UH-60 Black Hawk, or the AH-64 Apache. The missiles are also used for the F-16 or F/A-18 aircraft.
The modular system offers users the ability to assemble munitions into missile launchers to suit the exact type of operation the aircraft will be performing. Therefore, GD OTS produces a total of nine types of warheads, ranging from standard three-burst, training, as well as smoke, illumination or split-head (fletchette).
The complete missile consists of a total of three parts - the MK 66 MOD 4 rocket motor, one of several possible warhead types, and an advanced impact igniter. It is the modularity of the munitions system that provides users with a cost-effective solution to individual combat and training tasks. Missiles are stored in groups of seven or nineteen in launchers carried on the aircraft.
The success of this ammunition is evidenced by the large group of users, which includes the UK, Greece, Turkey, Egypt and South Korea, in addition to the USA.
